So we found this amazing church for sale in a town small enough to be considered a village. What a perfect layout it has for a haunt! However, will the townspeople be upset with this? The real estate agent is all for the idea, stating that the town itself strives to gain tourists, but what about the other 500 people? What do you guys think- should we go for it, or is it a little sacrilegious? Please share all thoughts and opinions.

Your best bet would be to try to gather a town hall meeting and here what people have to say! Better that than sink a bunch of money in it and have protestors outside of it every night....although there is no such thing as bad publicity! As far as being sacrilegious, in the end it is just a building! It isn't like the big guy himself reached down from the heavens and placed the church there; I've seen people having church in movie theaters, strip malls, old car dealerships and most recently a church opened up in an old funeral home! If none of these are sacrilegious then I don't know why the opposite would be.

Old churches have been turned into night clubs, hostels, apartment buildings, private residences and theaters. Some mainstream churches still host haunted attractions for the kids, just like Lions Clubs or JayCees, usually as fund raisers.
The townsfolk do not need to give their seal of approval. They don't have the permission to give in the first place. In other words, it is none of their business.
If you want to smooth any ruffled feathers, donate a dime from every dollar to a cause, like Meals on Wheels, the local homeless shelter, food pantry programs, Coats for Kids, that sort of thing.
It isn't a church anymore. If it was, it would have a congregation. Do something productive with that property.
Go for it.

I think it's perfectly okay! And not only that, but I remember going to a haunted house set up in a functioning church in 1995. This was in Pasadena, the church decided to put on its own show and hired some people to rig the place up with wonderful sets, props and illusions (including projected ghosts and a fiber-optic "Leota" type crystal ball head effect). It was one of the finest haunted houses I ever went to, and it utilized the natural atmosphere of the church as a backdrop. I quickly developed a lot of respect for this church!
"WHAT'S out there?"
"I don't know.......it was little and brown, and low to the ground!"

My take would be, if it's no longer an active church, is it still really a church? Go for it.

I think it is ok, in fact, I know of a church that has had one for the kids of the neighborhood, so I say if you want to do this badly, go for it .
I have flying monkeys- and I'm not afraid to use them!

I say go for it. Are you actually purchasing the building? Are you just renting the building? If you are buying, I would remove any religious items, like crosses, signs, etc. You could donate those to another church. If you are renting, I would cover up any non-removable items so that they couldn't be construed as part of your haunt. I think that would make it much easier and keep the protests to a minimum. Just my 2 cents.

There are other holidays besides Halloween? When did they start that?

Black Sabbath once recorded an entire album called Born Again in a church that had been converted into a studio. One of the songs that appeard on that album was called "Disturbing the Priests"
I think it would be okay if you did your haunt there.
