Arrrgh. For the last several years the DST/EST has driven me nuts! Typically, standard time doesn't kick in until November 1 to 6. Typically my municipality has TOT prior to the 31st, 6-8 pm. And local sundown isn't until6:40 pm. By the time my yard haunt lights look decent, TOT is over!
Drives me nuts!

I feel your pain. What we notice is that most of the younger kids come out early while it's still a bit light, but once darkness sets in, around 6:40 as you said, the older kids show up and we can get in some of our better scares. I figure an hour and a half of darkness isn't bad, but I agree, I loved when DST kicked in after Halloween.
Americans sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Agreed. It has changed the face of TOTing for sure. I always hope for good weather but for the last few years I have been wanting a cloudy (but not rainy) evening. If it is sunny, we are lucky to get 45 min of dark time.
It has definitely made me step my game up prop-wise. Things look a lot less real in daylight, so you really have to hide any imperfections if you want believability. People just don't get scared in the light, it is part of the human psyche. The best you can hope for is people thinking your stuff looks cool.
I don't think it is a threat to Halloween as a holiday, but I fear maybe in the long term it could kind of wreck TOTing. I'm sure we all have fond memories of TOTing as kids and I know damn well none of mine involve daylight.
