I'm thinking about making my first haunt this year (or maybe next year) and I was wondering if you could give me some ideas. I have a medium-sized backyard, where the haunt would be. I have a swing-set, patio with table and chairs, a shed, and lots of trees. Any decorating ideas? Ideas on how to have a scare factor? What I should purchase? I'm open to and will listen to all ideas

Start by breathing! What do you like in a haunt to begin with? If it is something you like to do, it will be more fun to work with. I would work with the trees, but that is a personal thing. Can you sketch the layout or take a picture so we can see the area?

Agree. We all have our niche, or genre that fascinates us. For some it is zombies, vampires, pirates, spiders etc. Decide what your theme will be. If you want to do a graveyard, there are plenty of things to do, but you would have to get busy. It looks like you have some slim walkways that would be perfect for hiding an animatronic in the bushes, wired to a footpad. They have plenty of those at spirit, halloween city etc. Perhaps some corpses, zombies or skeletons on the swingset. You could do a zombie playground, get a couple of zombie babies from spirit. Some type of fiery furnace with that oven on your patio. Just some ideas. Good luck! Were glad you have joined the haunters movement. But beware, addiction comes quite easily!

Folowing up on Magnusius's suggestion, do an overhead sketch/layout of your yard. sketch out possible paths ToTers will take. Think about where lights can be effectively used, and good spots for props/frights. Do you have helpers who will act in your haunt? Will your haunt only be open at night? Remember, al ot can be hidden or suggested by light and shadows. You don't have to break the bank to create an effective haunt. In the dark, simple figures made of old masks/clothes/gloves can be pretty spooky, especially with proper lighting and sound. One person hidden or posing at the end can be good final scare - the one that'll get the girls shrieking!

    Good luck!
