Maybe I never paid attention before but I noticed when I try to checkout on spirithalloween.com I get charged taxes no matter what zip codes I tried throughout the country. It pretty much ruined my coupon code. What's the deal? Anyone know?

That seems odd - I know here in Colorado they passed a law saying online retailers had to charge tax but I didn't think that was the case nationally. Would be interested to know if enough states have passed that law so retailers are just making it a blanket decision.

I believe generally if the company has a physical location in the state you're shipping to, you'll be charged tax. I get charged for tax with any oline orders for big box stores like Best Buy, Target, etc. because they have stores in my state.

I believe Nancy is correct. But I have discovered one sneaky thing that can be exploited on Amazon.com. Often they present "Marketplace" vendors with the same thing for the same price off to the right under the price. If you review them carefully, there is always at least one that is not in your state, and does not charge tax. Just a little something I noticed...
