If he gets the job, make sure he knows he may have to work Halloween night. They are open until 8 or 9 p.m. on Halloween.

Get it in writing. A friend of mine got a seasonal job there a few years back and was scheduled to work Halloween night. The store was open until 8 p.m. and then they had to start getting ready for the 50% off sale the next day. He told them he couldn't work Halloween and they threatened to hold his check (not pay him) if he didn't come in. He caved and went to work and missed Halloween altogether.

Can they legally hold your check if you don't show up for work? Something about that doesn't seem quite right.

No, that's an empty threat he should have called them on because there are severe repurcussions for pulling that kind of thing in most states. I've worked at places where the boss personally ran around in circles getting to the bank, etc, if something went wrong with the automatic paycheck system, just to avoid whatever dark penalties were in store for them.

Of course they would probably ban you from the store and prevent you from getting in on the clearance sales

Yes that would def be illegal in my state anyway...in Nevada they have to produce a check the instant you quit or get fired
