I just moved into a condo/townhouse community. I moved from a house where the only neighbor I had to worry about lived on the second floor. There were no rules about Halloween displays. Now I have tons and tons of neighbors. There is also a rule that you can only have decorations up 10 days before a holiday. I've been told from a co-worker who lives down the street that you can try to do it earlier, but it really depends on your neighbors.
I have no idea how to approach them. I can still work in the 10 day time frame since I'm doing window displays this year. I still want to be on good terms with them since there will be music and sound.
    Any ideas?

Alcohol! Host a party ASAP and get to know your neighbors. Get a feel for who they are and how they might react to your holiday decorations. Oh, and buy the good booze. Not the cheap stuff.

Break some other rules and see if anyone turns you in....then you'll know who you have to soften up

Errmm, not to sound like a party pooper, but I don't drink. I know most 'normal' people have parties with alcohol, but I don't.

Just decorate when you feel like it. See how they react.

Perhaps begin by putting out small stuff, waiting for a response, and then gradually adding.

No problem. Serve whatever you normally serve. All I'm saying is invite the neighbors over and get to know them and let them get to know you.

Think about it. If you had a new neighbor move in next door and didn't have a chance to meet him and get to know him, then all of a sudden you woke up to a pretty wild Easter display. You might think the guy is weird.

But, if you had gotten to know him and what he was about and then saw a huge Easter display you might think it's pretty cool and be more accepting of his passion simply because you had taken the time to get to know him.

yeah id have a little BBQ or get together to kind of feel them out....

also if its just window displays you can *probably* get away with it earlier. While I don't live in an HOA neighborhood, they are HUGE here (shudder). MOST of the times the rules like that relate to actual yard displays.

i wouldnt live in an HOA neighborhood, but a lot of people like them (for various reasons). and some are more strict than others...

You are paying to live there! I don't see why it depends on what your neighbors think? I would just be nice and friendly and ,make sure your displays are not to gory and your music is not too loud! You know you will find a few a holes in the neighborhood anyway! There's always one around! So be prepared And good luck!
