My guess is that when the little trolls smashed my pumpkins last year that were in the flower plots just under my window and beside the front door, that they got some seeds mixed in.
(It could be squash...any way to tell at this point???)

but I wonder if I should be watering them? Watering them more then the rain they are getting? Leaving them alone? What?

I am notoriously horrible with plants, so I don't have any experience with pumpkins, although I would love to try to grow some one year!

I checked on Google and I found this website about caring for pumpkins. There is a lot of info on there, hope it helps!

Absolutely, water 'em if it's dry. Even if it's just squash, you could cook them up as a delicious side dish

Also, check out this thread for some great pumpkin growing discussion: 2011 Pumpkin Patch Thread.

I believe you want a bed of fine sand under them so the water drains otherwise the pumpkin/gord will rot in the damp soil/mud. You need to turn them or they get the flat spot or looked squashed on one side. Do this without breaking the stem.

Yep! It's not as easy as it seems to turn them without breaking the stem!
(especially if parts of the vine have also taken root)

thanks for all the advice...I'll start watering them with the rain water I'm saving in the back yard and try and turn them on a regular basis.
In the meantime, it's been fun watching my cat spring up from between the leaves on the vines and try and snag birds that land on them...
