i have never had a problem getting enough pumpkins at Halloween time cuz i get mine early, but last year they said there was a shortage due to the heat and that having an effect on the crops, etc. i know there has been some crazy heat going on this July alone across the country. do you think it will effect the pumpkin crops this year? have you ever had problems getting pumpkins before due to this where you live???

    Pumpkin shortage? *nightmares* lol

Yeah, the last one was from too much rain and it was horrible!! People were selling Libby's for over $10 a can. Hopefully that won't happen again. Maybe all this heat and sun will be good for the pumpkin crop this year.

Every year this elusive "they" say there's a pumpkin shortage, yet every year I see more than enough pumpkins in stores everywhere from Walmart to garden centers & I see pumpkins rotting in fields after Halloween.

I've been alive for 44 years & have yet to witness an actual pumpkin shortage.

Yeah, Pumpkin shortages are regional, for the most part.

Funny thing about Libbys using shortages to jack prices - Libbys doesn't depend on the annual pumpkin crop. Libbys 'pumpkin' is a breed called Dickinsons Select, which looks like a tan acorn squash. The breed is grown for them, they control their own crop output with private growers. Nationwide or regional shortages have little effect on them, as they budget for serious disease/pest control, irrigation, fertilization, etc.
Dickinson Select is technically a pumpkin, or at least a first cousin to the pumpkin.

The classic sugar pumpkin? Libbys doesn't grow, buy or sell them.

last year i heard about the "shortage" of pumpkins due to the amount of rain, yet, there were plenty of good pumpkins at the usual floral/garden center i go to every year. the trick is to go early to get the good shaped ones, etc. and store them in a cool place or whatever until you decide to carve/decorate them. maybe the news people just need to run a story to fill up time cuz i swear i have heard of "shortages" before last year. as pumpkin pie is one of, if not THE favorite type of pie for the fall season, i can see where there would be shortages at the grocery stores, etc. as with pumpkins, get there early and stock up i guess. but i usually buy pre-made pumpkin pies (cuz i'm a guy and i'm lazy) so what do i know?

We need to start growing them inside controlled temperature areas. Steady, warm climates, plenty of water.

That way they can be sold all year round. There are places in the US that CAN grow pumpkins all year round, and they should.

I live in TN and there are a ton of pumpkin farms near my home, so I don't usually have this issue. I can imagine other areas might though. I do know that even here there were a lot of pumpkins last year that seemed to have mold on the stems at the stores.

Not around here in Dutchland Pa. Home of the Amish and thousands of farms. You can pick your own in oceans of pumpkins, any year.
