Ok, after asking about tree trunks earlier and getting so many awesome replies I'm about to start sketching. Mostly cause I'm feeling a rush of Halloween inspiration and I'm stuck at this desk job til 5.
Do y'all sketch before you start the outside decor? If so would you care to show off your pre-planning sketches?

I don't sketch a layout per se, but I will sketch projects out to give me a feel. Kind of concept art if you would.

I do a lot of drawing if I come up with a thought design and want to see it on paper. Then I can tweek it this way and that and see if it's feasible. Most are but, the finances aren't. lol I'm not an artist so really don't have anything to share. Just rough drafts. Sometimes I do a basic outline of where I want the Halloween props and how the yard is layed out. I've given that up since I'm not adding a whole lot per year anymore.

For my scenery plans I take photos of my yard, print them out and run the copy through our copier function but set at a much lighter resolution. Then I can draw on top of that lighter copy and sketch in my ideas or ultimate layout. I find this the down and dirty fast way to do my layout.
Using a computer and a program like Photoshop you can import the photo of your yard and set the opacity of the photo to be lighter and work from there.
I have also on occasion photo'd my larger props, printed out the pics and then reduced/enlarged them to fit the yard photo more or less and cut them out and arranged on my yard photo to get my arrangement.
I'm a very visual person as you might have guessed. Nice sketch of the pumpkins BTW.

Nope.
It's all in my head. I know what I want things to look like & where I want them to go & never sketch any ideas. I've just never felt the need.
Not that I don't love to draw stuff, I've just never done it for my Halloween ideas.Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, the best damn little band you should be listening to!

We've never anguished over the set-up, just sort of placed ouur stuff out with a little "Inside The Head" preparation. If you have enough space, there should be no problem. But, of course, there will always be second guessers...

oh yes! I sketch everything, even lighting and placement of electrical cords! Depending on what it is Im planning depends on the level of detail I give the sketches. If its in the final phases of a prop I want to build and need more detail I will add that in, but most are initial with roughs and very sketchy outlines. Alot of it I number the sketches with a key nearby to indicate what number is what prop. I can show you last years sketches as they are better detail than this years.
