I was watching a classic episode of "Are You Afraid of the Dark.." I am a 90's kid, so I adore these old shows from when I was a kid. Anyway, was a Halloween episode and the neighbors invite the kids inside the doorway when they trick or treat. Was this ever done? I mean entering the home of the neighbors with a group of friends/kids?
I have never heard of that idea as far as giving away treats instead of candy. That would never go over today, its candy or nothing now. Well, I did get a tooth brush once when I was a teen.
Perhaps some older folks might have done this?? It seems people probably used to know their neighbors alot better as well as the neighbor kids names etc.
I would love to hear others take on giving away treats. Boy would I love to give away cupcakes and other yummy goodies, I know that would never be okay with the neighbors though. Too many fears, mistrust and worries over "would could" be. I know some people still do this. A neighbor used to have a cotton candy machine and make cotton candy outside his house for all the neighbors and kids.
I AM NOT saying I am doing this nor will do this. But I saw it on TV and because I was born in the 80's, I have no firsthand knowledge of this. I would love to hear stories about TOT in the past.

I've been toying with the idea of having a walkthrough. My place is set up perfectly where the TOTs would enter the backyard, walk through the haunt, then come inside from the back door and only have to walk through my dining room & living room (which would also be set up as a haunt), then leave out the front door. I wouldn't give out anything homemade though, as it would more than likely be thrown out. My husband isn't too crazy about this idea. Most kids that come are with their parents anyways. So, I'm unsure. It would be a few years before I'd even attempt it. P.S. that was a great show!

The way things are now, I dont think Id do it. However when I was a kid, there were a couple of the neighbors who did this very thing. One always had popcorn balls (homemade), another made candy apples. Another did have cupcakes. Back then though, in the neighborhood, you knew everybody. And you trusted them. Nowadays its like neighborhoods are disjointed and unconnected. Your next door negihbor is a stranger. Its a shame because I would do this.

I took my friend's sister trick or treating last year and one woman gave out unwrapped homemade Rice Crispies Treats...dropped them in the bags on top of the wrapped candy in there! I thought it was weird, we threw them out. They seemed really old and stale.
I think I once gave cookies to a few neighbors who came trick-or-treating when I happened to be having a Halloween party on Halloween... These were kids who I knew though and whose parents I knew.Zombie Eradication/Disposal Unit (ZEDU) - K-9 Patrol Division

In Illinois to own or work in a "Haunted House" you must have a criminal back round check on file.
(Unless it's a charity haunt.. so I guess all those who fail the criminal back rounders will be found in those haunts? (Where perverts Never go?)
I once read that the ancient fear of razor blades being stick, hidden inside of an apple only ever happened once and it was one family member trying to get their relative. (Urban Myth?)
Would anyone really want a bunch of strangers inside their own house? Forget the kids, maybe the accompanying adult is casing the joint? I would think it would be a lot easier to get into any house if you had already once been inside of it to see how things are laid out, where the locks are, ex cetra.
An old maid school teacher here used to hold out a round, wooden Church collection plate , "Here, take something." There were some mini-candy bars surrounded by long , extremely sharpened pencils, all points "Out"!
Each of these brand new pencils had her name on it. Not often professional torturers put their name so convincingly on their weapon of pain-infliction. Maybe she wanted jail time to escape those kids?"My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

The whole thing about poisoned candy and apples with razor blades in them from strange neighbors is a myth anyway.
Statistically the tampered food was always perpetrated by a kid's family member.
So, really, you were safer around strangers come Halloween than you were your own family. Which, from a certain point of view, is pretty funny.

Aww Shadowbat. I have to agree with you. The popcorn balls sound lovely! It really is too bad that fears, myths, misunderstandings and not meeting your neighbors has caused such a change in treat giving, changed something so wonderful.
Yes, I too was saying I wouldn't do giving away real treats but how nice it would be to do so!!!
