My wife and I have a few days to kill toward the end of the month and are looking for a little getaway. We would love to find some spooky destination to visit to put us in the Halloween mood (in July!). Right now we are thinking about San Jose to visit the Winchester Mansion. I've been to it before, but my wife has not. I was wondering if any of you have suggestions to consider. Only location concern is that it isin the US, since we only have 5 days to travel. We are big amusement park dark ride fans as well. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Oh my gosh have you not been to Jerome right here in AZ? The most haunted place in AZ.....and they have a beautiful hotel there that used to be a old hospital that is supposed to be very haunted. Browsing the local shops makes for a great day.

Of course no trip there would be complete without a stop at the Haunted Hamburger....look up the hill from the patio and you will see one of the most creepy Haunted houses I have ever seen and out front the most amazing views of the valley below.

Darkstar,
Yes Jerome is AWESOME!!! We haven't been there in a while, so a trip there is overdue. Great suggestion! I've been to the hotel, but never stayed there... have you? But I must admit I haven't even heard of the Haunted Hamburger! Tell me more! We've just been there during the day to look at the shops. Beautiful drive, too.

I don't know exactly how far you'd be willing to travel for your getaway.... but if it were me, I'd want to go the Mutter Museum in Philly.

Mutter Museum... cool, but we are both a bit squeamish when it comes to the real stuff, so not sure that would our cup of tea. Interesting, though!

Winchester is amazing! I went a couple years ago and I absolutely loved it. Plus you'd be pretty close to Colma, city of the dead! If you guys are fans of cemeteries, you'd love Colma!

Virginia City has a pretty neat Cemetery, some haunted buildings, and is close to Tahoe for some relaxation.
As for dark rides, check the list over here: http://www.laffinthedark.com/lists/operating.htm
maybe there's a park or two on there worth researching.
Being in Utah, we have Lagoon : http://www.lagoonpark.com/ Which does have 2 dark rides...It's not the best amusement park out there by any stretch, however.

Cool, Thanks everyone!
Dark Star... we DID make our way to Jerome last weekend and had a GREAT time! We ate at Haunted Hamburger (unfortunately the service was the only thing scary about it) but the view of that haunted house was well worth it. Did you know that house is for sale??? I found it online... it needs a total rehab and it is uninhabitable, but what a great lot! Price is only $117k but of course it would cost a lot to demo on that hillside lot. If I knew anything about construction I'd be tempted! Anyway, it had been a while since I had been to Jerome, and the last time was before I was obsessed with haunted things! What a great time! What a great suggestion!! I've been itching to go back since, and I think another trip will be in my near future. We also want to try to make it back up to Jerome to do the Ghost Walk they will be doing October 7 and 8. My wife wants to have dinner at Asylum and we are even thinking about staying a night at the Grand Hotel! We did Jerome after spending the first half of the day just north of Flagstaff venturing through an underground lava-tube ice cave that is 40C and a mile deep... great break from the heat! That was spooky in its own way too as there is no lighting... I definitely plan on returning to visit there soon, as well.
Next weekend will be Winchester mansion, which I can't wait to see again. Once again, the last time I was there was before I had a fascination with haunting. We're going to try to hit Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz also. It sounds as though I need to check into Colma, if its nearby!
