I usually don't start picking up candy until Sept, then I just buy a bag or two occasionally when I go to the store.

Like everyone has said, check the expiration date. As long as you keep it someplace it wont melt it should be fine. I just wouldnt freeze it.

I have to agree about not freezing chocolate more than a day or two max. Chocolate is all we ever give out on Halloween (do keep small bag of non-choc on hand for any TOTs that are allergic). Just refrigeration or any cool storage spot keeps the choc very well up to shelf life expiration.

Buying this early? Can't say I've ever done it- usually wait until end of August at the earliest, then store it in a mega vegetable crisper I have.
The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague.
Who shall say where the one ends...the other begins?

Do NOT freeze chocolate. Virtually all chocolate is shelf stable for at least a year, and many for multiple years, assuming it's kept in a cool environment and not subjected to temperatures over 95 degrees. I have Hershey baking pieces that still taste as good as they did when I bought them 3 years ago on close out for 25 cents a bag at the local supermarket. When I bought them, the sign above them said "discontinued and already in stock for a year, as-is". I laughed as I loaded up the shopping cart with raspberry chips, york peppermint chips, and micro hershey bars. I bought 80 bags. I use them to make the inside filling of truffles. I'm down to my last 10 or so bags.

Personally, I can't buy chocolate bars for TOTers more than a month before Halloween. Last year I scarfed down an entire box of full sized candy bars in the month the boxes were in my pantry. Not that it matttered, since I had plenty left at the end of the night.
