Some of you may remember my last thread about shared space (Anyone Else Live in an Apt, Condo, etc & Have to Share Space?)
It just got worse. I thought I could do atleast a small yard display, something light and classic. Then I talked to my neighbor today and he told me it was against their religion to celebrate Halloween. He doesn't want me decorating at all in the front yard or on the porch.
My haunt was just getting good and this year was going to be the 'big' one. I have so many new items and a huge plan. The kids were just starting to talk about my house. I don't know any of my neighbors well enough to try to set up at another house instead.
I think I'm going to cry...
(My husband is now looking for another apartment for us)

Oh how sad but don't give up hope yet. I intentionally won't make any comments about the neighbor.
I'd hate to live in a neighborhood that doesn't embrace ToTing as long as there were young kids in the neighborhood. Good luck on moving to a new neighborhood down the road. I know it's not quite the same thing but you could always decorate from inside to be seen out the windows. When the weather has been rainy during Halloween, I've focused my efforts in that way and even received compliments from my neighbors.

Oh that must be so disappointing for you both, at first I would be inclined to say "to H3*% with the neighbors religious beliefs"!! However I have lived in a in condo type setting and there are situations where you need to keep a low profile, at the end of the day it makes life so much easier....here's wishing you the best of luck finding a new dwelling with more tolerant neighbors.
What I am going to need is your standard flame thrower...

I'm curious, who was there first? You or your neighbor? If you have seniority, they may just have to deal with it.
Not knowing the configuration of your apartments or how you and your neighbor share the area, do you share a common "yard"? If you have your area and your neighbor has his, I don't see a problem. Not that Halloween is really a "religious" holiday, but I think some mutual respect and understanding may occur.
I mean, if it's about tolerance, I don't go knocking on my neighbor's door telling them I can see their Christmas tree or menorah or kwanzza candelabra, and I'd like them to get rid of it because my beliefs are different. I think you should be allowed to celebrate those things that bring you joy, or those things you believe in. I can't imagine it being offensive to someone (unless it's over-the-top gory or something like that).

We were there first however we are much younger than them (I know it shouldn't matter). Its a house, we have the first floor and they have the second. There aren't any common areas really. They get the front yard and the one good side and we have the back and other side. Our sideyard can't really be seen by the street since its behind the parking area and its kind on a slope.
All my past neighbors have been really cool about us using the front yard and porch.
As for the religion part, there is atleast one I can think of that won't let their followers have anything to do with 'pagan' holidays like Halloween, Christmas and Easter... If I get a copy of the Watchtower on my doorstep, I'm calling my landlord.

Could go into a million different arguments about the mix of religions involved in holidays and in the end there's that problem in the world...
People are soo bored with their lives they find things to be upset about.
It sucks you're in this situation... I'd bite my tongue... hope to move... and keep the peace... you're gonna have to live with these people EVERYDAY untill a move happens.
I feel for you.

That sucks.
Everybody here will just have to celebrate Halloween twice as hard for you.
Good luck finding a new place!Daughter of Ghouliet ~ Halloween Partners in Crime

That really sucks. I'd be upset too. Hopefully you can find somewhere to set up.
