Against my wishes, some of my props had been stored outdoors on a covered porch. Well... seems a feral cat thought that a nice soft lined coffin was just a peachy place to raise a family. Later, the kitty family decided that paper mache and Styrofoam make for lovely scratching posts.

    Grrrrrrrrrrr!

    I like cats... but...

Anyway, I am trying to figure out what I can salvage. I figure the wood and Styrofoam might survive, but the paper mache may not be able to be de-scented.

Does anybody have a suggestion that doesn't involve a shotgun?

Is there anything I can spray on to take away the odor? Or is my stash destined for the burn barrel?

There is a spray called Eww! by Bissel for cats, I found it at Petsmart. It breaks down the enzyme that makes it smell. Our cat had a couple accidents and you can spray it on it or even I add it to the washing machine and the smell is gone. We've tried some other deodorizers and didn't have much luck, but this one works really well. I would definitely try it on the paper mache before you toss it. Best of luck!

This is going to sound crazy, but I've had surprising success with it:

Once you've removed all the urine you can, place the item in a sealed plastic bag next to (but not touching) either fresh clean scoopable cat litter or, even better, a peeled apple. As the apple breaks down, it releases fumes that deodorize the original smell and even replace it with a fresh fruity one. I kid you not.

Whichever product you use, wait several days before releasing the prop from its plastic prison.

I'll definitely try the apple trick first since it's the most economical. I also have a roll of cheese cloth that I will first double bag and then throw in the freezer to kill any critters. After a week, I'll try the apple and report back.

    I feel for you!
I've had my fair share of things that cats have messed up or destroyed, including furniture and door frames.
    Some interesting ideas here!
    Good luck!

    I am TOTALLY trying this.

Our Augie seemed to like peeing on things other than in the litter box for a while & he happened to hit the hubby's college diploma that was in an envelope, I may try it on that.
