I was wondering how many of us of decorate all of October, Only on Halloween and don't decorate?
I start decorating the first of October (or first weekend) and add as the time goes closer to Halloween.
I know most people (none halloween addicts like us) will only decorate quickly only on Halloween night. But I was surprise to read that many here also only decorate on Halloween night too.
Why is that? Weather? scrare of being robbed? Religion? To much work?
Please tell me your reasons, I am curious.
JM
PS: Why I decorate early? THE RUSH! (L). I just love coming from work at night, seeing my house with dead things everywhere, nightmarish things hanging around (L). Actually, Halloween being only one night is a can't for me. I see Christmas decoration stuck for months (due to snow, at my house), why not halloween decoration can't be out also for almost a month too?
Plus, the kids and neighboors love it. I have 4 school bus that pass in front of my house, everytime, the kids are glued to the window, looking at my house, going OOOohhh....

No military medals, my house, but then I'm open almost every night of the year approaching my 25th year of owning this house.
The huge steel-welded skull infront was my exit for many years. The pteradacyl skeleton has been hanging on the side of the house for many years now (it's Not paper mache!)
The 1950 Hudson cars being pulled into the side of the house by supernatural forces have been there "forever" too, as has the house's paint scheme, flat black first floor gradually turning grey as it climbs, to give the house (hopefully) a "Floating " look at night when most people come here.
I built the cupola on top of the house too. I think I proportioned it corectly, more than I can say for others around this area who may have been inspired by my work!? (Too tall usually with too-tall windows in the cupola!?
The beached nuclear sub awaiting repair is in the side yard as is the Hudson impacting my brick outhouse and the new upright steel coffin on small tank tracks ("Coming to getcha!)
Steel is fairly vandal resistant.

Other than the countdown sign, I start decorating the week before.
Why? If I had stuff up all month, the lawn would be in worse shape than it already is.
Seriously, October there is still yard care to consider. December, not so much.

We wouldn't have any decorations left if we put stuff out before Halloween day.

I start decorating the inside of my house the weekend after Labor Day! This includes:
Curtains
Pumpkins
Table Decor
Life Size Indoor Props
Wall Decor
I do this because the awsner is simple... I love Halloween and want to enjoy the decorations as long as I can (Sept-Oct). For me, the season begins after Labor Day. The same goes for many who decorate for Christmas, after Thanksgiving through New Years. I never become tired of the decor, I just look forward to the 2 months they are up.
I decorate the Outside of the house around 2 weeks before Halloween. This is because of the weather mainly.

I usually set out stuff that isnt that important to me early on in case of theft or damage. And on the night of, I will place some nicer things to keep an eye on. However, I got my first house this past year and was able to go all out like never before.
I literally started the day after Thanksgiving, mostly because I had to clear the garage to make space. I worked on clearing everything for about a month. I had a week to decorate everything before the big day and if it wasnt for the one inflatable and metal arch outside giving me trouble I would have had more time until the TOTS showed up to put on a more decent costume.
I ended up putting my twilekk headpiece on and a sorceress robe, lol. I had no other scenes to match my decor, boo
This year my Oogie Boogie costume will be complete! I swears it! lol.
I like the idea of having all my best stuff in the garage, I just have to open the doors for when Im ready. I had a simple decor design outside the whole month of Oct with stuff I didnt mind if it got messed up or stolen.
Since Im new to the hood, I wasnt sure what to expect, but turns out a neighbor 2 houses down (who stopped by with about 30 kids on a hayride type thing) mentioned they do it up every year too and the husbands b-day is the same as my fiances', the 29th of Oct, hehe.
The only downer was the neighbors across the street. the father always makes comments to me. The man thinks Wolverine is evil but wont explain to me why, lol. Thats how ultra religious he is. Turns out I ended up with Jesus at my haunt, if he accepts it why cant the neighbors?
Long story short- fiances brother wore a brown robe and furry hands/feet to be "Harry Potter". As in too much hair and he kinda looks like the kid from the books. He got itchy a hour or 2 in the night and took off the furry things and we said he needed a wig so we grabbed the viking wig/beard.
The beard wouldnt stay on but he wore the wig. Seconds later a parent came in , I guess to check out the scene before bringing in his kids (which he did them all separately, carrying them, 5 total, lol).
Well the parent took a long look at my fiances bro and said Merry Christmas, lol. He said back Happy Hannakah or something like that, but it was just a hilarious situation. I then remarked that if Jesus could stand to be in my haunt whats the neighbors problem,

Fortunately I have a large detached garage. I begin the set-up near Oct 1 in the garage, only because it takes so much time to get everything done. The outside items will be set up a week or so early, but nothing too valuable and finally 2 days before I set out everything.
I have fenced in property with a couple acres. I don't have much problems with vandals.

We start the Cemetery the first weekend of October, and continue to set up stuff until a couple of days before Halloween. We can close the garage door on our garage haunt without moving anything, we bring more elaborate props into the garage at night as well. I like doing it in stages because I get to enjoy it longer, and spreads out the work!
What I am going to need is your standard flame thrower...
