We're moving again. This past Halloween I actually set up my sister's house, considering I've been staying with family while the hubby is away on deployment. Tried making some new props, and I'm probably going to leave the newer stuff with her. But in the next month my son and I will be moving to Gulfport MS to wait for his coming home.
I was wondering if there were any other Haunters in the Gulf coast area, or if anyone has any info on what Halloween is like in the south. Weather, best Halloween stores, haunted houses?
I believe the housing we'll have is not single family. For all you great haunters here; any ideas on great ways to do a haunt set up if you live in a town house, or duplex?
Thanks everyone and have a scary day!![]()

My husband is in the military and we just moved. We actually spent Halloween in a hotel and it was so horrible.
I have traveled thru MS but do not know what it is like at Halloween there.
My husband is from South Carolina and it is usually warm and nice for their Halloween. We have lived in North Carolina many years, and we always had a warm Halloween and never even needed to wear coats. We just moved from New Mexico- windy Halloween with all your props blowing away! I actually had a heavy wooden coffin get blown around due to the bad wind!
We are currently in Missouri, and it is our second time here. It is coldish(you need a warm costume or light coat) but nice here.
Good luck and I hope your husband gets home safely. Thank him for serving, and thank you as well...for going thru it all alone.
I imagine you will have warm Halloween weather...have fun!

ooh yes we have had multiple duplex haunts! I never ask our neighbors for permission, b/c if you live on base or in a complex they will have clear rules for you to go by. Then if you go by the rules, your neigbors can't complain. Or they can complain, but housing cannot do anything!
Our rules are NO roof decorations, and no real candles. i double checked after reading the housing handbook.
I have had my entire side of the duplex, my yard, my garage are, etc, covered in decorations and no one has ever complained. I don't use music except for the night of the haunt.
Every military base we have ever lived on has has a 30 day holiday decoration policy. I have never seen it enforced, but if a neighbor comlained I am sure they would.
One day I came home and an MP was sitting in front of my heavily decorated yard, talking on his police phone. He was looking at my yard. He sat there about 10 minutes, and then left.
Just read your handbook and you should be fine!

Thank you I can't imagine spending Halloween in a hotel. Thank your husband too, it's good to know there are other military haunters here on the forum. Moving all the decorations and props can be a bit stressful. And I still get a kick out of the movers when they have to rebox the box o' skulls, tombstones, and the vulture.

The last housing we were living in had the 30 day holiday decoration rule too. Thankfully we didn't have any issues with the office. We barely got any ToT's last year though. I will make sure I read the handbook really well. And make sure any crazy ideas are going to get the okay from the office. Thank you!

I will guess that it will be humid in MS. It can be a crap shoot here in central FL. We have had it from the high 30's to the high 80's. And the thing is, you just don't know.
Look for Linda Paul, she lives in Pensacola and they do a haunt and can give you a better picture since they live in your same climate zone, basically. Storage is a little more interesting too, just be mindful of the heat and bugs and what items can be affected by them when you choose your storage areas down here. Latex goes bad faster so protect any masks, and roaches will eat a large range of things.
Hope this helps!
Our son was army and was overseas 3 times. Thank goodness he is home safe, and thank you for all you and your loved ones do!

I am from Biloxi which is next to Gulfport. Last year; the weather was in the low 80s and perfect. Wind isnt too bad. It all depends on if you are on the water or close to the beachfront. Halloween is pretty good here. Their are your local haunted houses, haunted hayrides in the country and i think their is a corn maze around here too(Not 100%).
As far as TOTers. It really depends on the neighborhood you live in. I live in a nice neighborhood which is surrounded by other neighborhoods so we tend to get more than normal. Last year was really my first time to decorate and we got between 500-600 peeps come by and look.
When it comes to stores; PartyCity is really only it. They do have Spirits pop up in mobile and slidell for the season. You have your standard Targets, Kmarts, Walmarts and Biglots(Good Prices). Actually CVS and walgreens had great props this past year also.
Let me know if you have any other questions?

First, thanks to you and your hubby for your sacrifice and service to our country.
One suggestion I have is when you move in, talk to the locals there to see if there are any local legends or monsters (like our 'goatman' here in Maryland). This could be a good opportunity to incorporate some 'local flavor' into your haunt there.
Maybe your sister can start her own Halloween haunt using your propsTried making some new props, and I'm probably going to leave the newer stuff with her.

lol - hope you never visit Ft Drum in upstate NY.....we'd had snow on Halloween, and temps might be in the 50s...a couple of years have had straight rain for hours, which is hell on props, not to mention TOTs....

Kewls, thank you!
Would you know off hand if the home improvement stores carry the pink insulation foam boards. I'm wondering if it's something I would need to pick up before I moved. Out in central CA none of the home improvement stores carried it. They said it didn't get cold enough for them to need to carry it in the store.
