I know there are ton of people who do garage walk thru or some in the front yard.
Has any one done a basement haunt? I had a few questions...My basement you go down the stairs and it leads you to a big open area. But there is no way to get back up except up the same stairs. So how would I do a haunt or where should it start if there is only one entrance and exit? Anyone have pics or diagrams? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Hi Erin,
Just dont let anyone slip and fall on the stairs God forbid...that could be a legal disaster!..
If your not worried about that, just let 'em in a few at a time, and make an obvious pathway that circles the perimeter, and leads back to the stairs..Have a ghost or something point them in the right direction to start, then they'll follow the obvious way back.
Build false walls throughout the basement with sheets or cardboard...It has the advantage that you could start working on it long before Halloween, at your own leisure..no weather concerns. No nosey neighbors..ect.

Howdy Erin!
I/We don't have many basements here in socal but I like the idea! I myself would create a revolving or 2-way hidden door which allows you to come in at the bottom of stairwell but closes once entered. This would force one to exit though the other side of the basement haunt. It would need to be rigged somehow to close behind patrons or maybe a greeter that opens and closes the door... A swinging direction path door would be the best with a cast or family member as a directional guide.
It would take a lil planning but its all possible for the non-claustrophobic TOTs...

Unless your stairwell is at least 6-8 foot wide to sufficiently accomodate entering and exiting traffic simultainiously, preferably with a divider wall between the two, it's not gonna happen. Anything short of that and you'll need to let one group at a time enter and exit, before the next group enters.

i remember when you did that osenator, never saw the pics though. looks great. i did a basement haunt a couple of years. i always have a tour guide and only so many kids at a time. i did a maze. it was basically a square with a cardboard wall down the middle. it went over big time. the next time i did a maze haunt, i had everyone hold onto a jumprope and that kept them together better and i could set the pace. also preoccupied their hands from touching stuff.

I had (at one time) two sets of stairs to the basement and an outside basement entrance but I decided I needed another way out too. I dug a 10 ft, deep hole outside next my basement wall , dug a trench that slowly sloped upward away from the house about 95 feet and made a concrete tunnel, it gradually turns so as to build anticipation as to what might be around the next curve.
As the tunnel comes above ground level it is hidden inside of a 1953 Hudson car wreck, then is hidden inside my nuclear submarine I built 23 years ago(walking length-wise of course) then into a small shabby-looking shed that is covered by trees and vines most of the year.
I only had about 4hrs. of help digging and it took me a couple of years to complete.
People driving by that first summer thought I was trying to kill myself working so hard in the hot sun but I have always had to be a physical person in my life, I would not recommend someone who was not to try such a thing.
i learned that blue plastic tarps do not hold out rain, they just slow it down, some, the most aggrivating part of the whole project, shoveling mud!
Many things in my haunted house are pretty much one-of-a-kind, but then this is also a tourist attraction open all year."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

Here's a link to my basement walkthrough.
I only have one set of stairs as well, you have to make sure you know how many people are in the basement at all times, in case something happens.
You can have a set number of groups who are in the walk through at one time, as one goes up, one can come down.
There are a ton of possibilities using a basement, you dont have to worry about weather and neighbors.
You have more setup and takedown time
and the electrical and lighting can be easily changed to fit your haunt
