Does anyone know of any off season convetions or activities? Some gatherings or workshops for building props or makeup or whatever would be cool.

Not that this would be close for you or anything, but Tom Savini has a school close to Pittsburgh here where you can learn all kinds of awesome skills. If I could go back in a time machine and this were available out of high school, it would be something I would definately consider getting into.

The Transworld Halloween show in St. Louis is fairly close to Chicago. I'm in southern WI and if I can manage to get away that weekend I'll be there.

The Ravens Grin Inn is OPEN almost every night of the entire year for tours of a "Haunted", Haunted House, featuring my own artwork and strange ideas and the true haunted history of this old inn.

Although tonight with the temp. outside being only 9 little degrees...nobody showed up. Last night a bachelor party of ten drove 100 miles to see the show."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

My best off-season activity would be hanging out here at the HF! Constant inspiration and ideas!
A Halloween prop is a terrible thing to waste..
