anyone remember these?
I just got a set from toys r us.
Its the one with the "eggs" you put in and it melts then you push down on the plunger and it goes into a 2 part mold.
these eggs seem to be a gelatin base (solid form until melted down). not very sturdy at all. legs come off the bugs pretty easy. pretty disappointing.
I seem to remeber them being more rubbery and durable.
then I came accross the older style creepy crawler oven.
These use the "goop" ( different material, liquid I assume firms up after heating)
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a differnce in how the bugs come out.
Or am I just not remembering these accuratly.

You can find the old style sets on ebay. there are the really old sets like my brothers had that used the metal molds and the vulcanizing rubber compound they called Goop and then there are the 'new' old style sets that had plastic molds but still used heat to solidify the goop into a rubber. there were relatively durable but very thin appendages could be pulled off and the entire bug could be torn in half if you put any effort into it. they had a horror set in the old metal molds that was pretty to cool to me as a 9 year old. It's actually really cheesy, but it doesn't mean that I don't wish i still had that set. All I have left are a couple of burn scars from the oven unit.

My older brother had the old set with the cast iron molds. Pretty darn cool. (I think the 80s version was basically just a tweaked easy bake oven though.
Didn't realize they had a new version. Of course, the critical flaw is - they eventually stop making goop.
Here's the commercial for the original "thingmaker" commercial.

I used to have a lot of fun with the Creepy Crawler set. I had the original one with the plastic goop. I don't remember the creations being too flimsy, though. I remember playing with it a lot, so the bugs must have come out pretty decent.

Okay thanks for confiming my recolection of these bugs.
I think I know what the problem is.
the set I have, advertised bugs that splat when you smash them.
there is a hollow mold you fil with goo.
that must be why the bugs are made of a gelatin material. to allow them to be squashed.
a little more research , and I found a Star wars version of the creepy crawler oven along with the standard bug cersion.
I found re-fill goop. So I guess I just bought the wrong thing. At the time I didnt realize there was more than one kind.
