It's spring again. Breezes are just a slight bit warmer. The sun beams down a little more strongly. And the call of the overstuffed bins in my basement gets a little bit louder. Yep, it's that time again. Time to start weeding through my Halloween decor collection and deciding what might find a new home at the local thrift store.

But therein lies my trouble: going to that thrift store. Because, right now, everyone is spring cleaning, and their discards and cast-offs don't look like trash to me. Anything Halloween, cutesy home decor, pumpkin pail or maybe a small outdoor prop, is something to consider. Most, of course, are that lovely, brilliant orange, making them impossibly eye-catching. So going just to drop things off is very, very difficult.

So for now, I've started putting the few "maybes" I can decide on in a laundry basket, with the intention of taking them straight to the thrift store. But the challenge will be in bringing that basket home empty.

Nope. Just throw up some lights on the trim, put out the inflatable polar bear and the blow mold Santas (of which there are seven) and wait for the snow and the ole elf himself.
So 'scuse me while I grab a cup of hot chocolate and relax on the couch, 'cuz nothings getting in the way of my well deserved holiday mellow.

Heard stories in the past about folks that have lost all their props and decorations to flooding or natural disaster, and it made me wonder, what one thing would I try to salvage/keep if that happened.

I've got several childhood decorations still that would break my heart to lose, but then I think I would also be crushed if I lost my Spooky Town items. And I've got a ghost and a ToT teddy bear blow-mold lights that would kill me if they were destroyed, along with my musical 'snow'-globes, plus a collection of miscellaneous kitsch...

Hmm, I guess I should check my insurance and keep my fingers crossed, because it would just about shatter me to lose some of this stuff.

Here's a verrrry scary movie if you can find it. If you have a credit card, you'll want to cut it up. And if you can't cut that card up, you'll want to cut your throat.

The monster: predatory lenders. The victims: us and our loved ones. That's what makes it so scary: the fact it's really happening, everyday, in your neighborhood. Though it's not a 'horror movie' per se, it's a nouveau horror set-up up along the lines of "The Blair Witch Project."

This movie explores one of the downsides of our uber-materialistic society, credit card debt, and how lenders prey especially on the least able to handle/afford these cards. Most eye-opening, and infuriating, is the enabling assist the industry gets from Congress and President Bush. A must view for high schoolers, and anyone interested in an eye-opening look at how they're helping make the rich richer.

With rising glee and creeping dread I greet the sight of Halloween merchandise in our big box stores. It's wonderful, don't get me wrong, but it's all so fleeting.

In years past the anticipation would get the better of me, and I would stalk through the stores right after July 4th, hoping for a glimpse, any glimmer, of something Halloween related.

Then, once the merchandise was out, I could spend hours, days, pouring over items, comparing styles and designs, figuring out just what would work best in the display.

But today it's not the same. Everything's so rushed, the season so condensed, it's impossible not feel a bit cheated. Where once it seemed the days stretched endlessly and there was lots of time to mull decorating options, now it's a necessity that, as soon as the merchandise hits the shelf, you better be ready to get what you want, because all to soon the'll be relegating it to the secondary sales section.

Don't get me wrong, I obviously still love the season, but it feels like it's getting short shrifted.

Curb divin' you can almost always find something useful. Recently someone threw out 4-5 perfectly good tomato cages along with a roll of wire fencing. Talk about a find! You just never know. Also, walking home from school my daughters found a couple of large black & orange Halloween serving bowls, in perfect shape, set out. Being the sweeties they are, they snagged 'em for me. Others' trash is my treasure for sure.

And the good stuff folks throw away these days! While out walking (and surreptitiously scoping out the curbside action in case somebody throws away something Halloween related), there was a like-new book case and office supplies (some unused!) put out for garbage pickup. I guess if you have to move *right now* it's understandable, but it's crazy not to donate this stuff to a school or charitable oraganization if you've got time.

It's amazing what gets tossed by the university students too. Kids use something one semester, and just toss it when they leave! We've become such a disposable society, it's kind of scary. At any rate, all found 'treasures' will be put to good use!
