I was born on Halloween, so I've always gone all out in dressing up and decorating for the holiday. My lovely wife, Paula, doesn't share my enthusiasm for Halloween, but she humors me anyway.

In 2007, we purchased our first home. For many years, I dreamed of a yard of my own to decorate for Halloween. Now I have one! I would have to haunted our yard the first year, but we moved into the house in October, which made it impossible to get anything together. The second year, I had big plans for a haunted mausoleum and a grave yard, but I waited too long to get started and had only a few props built by Halloween.

Last year, I was off to another late start, but I thought I could pull it off. Then, last September, my dad was in a motor vehicle accident. He was in ICU in Duluth, MN which is a 100 mile drive from my house. I spent most of my days off commuting to and from Duluth, so I had no time or the desire to work on my haunted yard plans. My dad was taken off life support and passed away on Halloween.

Now Halloween will always remind of my Dad's death, and I sometimes wonder whether I should even bother with Halloween anymore.
After thinking it over, I've decided to try once more, and see what happens. Maybe it will go well and more will follow, or maybe it will be my last. But I do know I have to give it one more shot.
