I thought about suggesting a support structure for the brooms, but didn't know how to work out the logistics of making it stand without falling over, not being visible, etc, etc.

You can get fishing line that will easily support that weight. I made a 'cage' last year and strung it up (Put one staple in my ceiling to tie it to) and the cage is probably 5-8 pounds. Just depends on the line (should say on the package).
